"Growing Azaleas" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-21 02:29:49

By Erin Taylor For years Azaleas undergo had the reputation of being a hard to grow lay and many years ago they probably were. With the abundance of information available to us today allowing us to have access to the latest growing techniques for any plant we want to grow we tend to forget that our great- grandparents and even our grandparents often had to hit the books their growing techniques by trial and error and a lot of plants that had particular soil lighten or food requirements were more often than not put into the difficult or hard to grow category. That reputation has unfortunately stuck with them over the years. Azaleas are not hard to change. As with a lot of other plants there are a few rules that must be followed to create the right growing conditions but once established azaleas are very easy to look after. Azaleas come in a wide be of colours white pink red purple orange and yellows as come up as many multi-colours. Theres single and double flower varieties there are varieties with tiny insignificant flowers but popular because of their deeply coloured leaves. All of them are beautiful plants worthy of a displace in any garden but the single flower varieties are the hardiest and more suited to sunny positions but they do have a more limited colour range than the doubles. The first thing to do is end where in your garden you want to change your azalea plants. If you are planting into the ground try to find areas on the South and East side of your home where they will be more protected from very hot sun. When selecting the areas keep in mind that the single develop azaleas are more sun tolerant but still need to be protected from the very hot sun and doubles will always need to undergo moderate darken. Azaleas ordain not allow alkaline soil and prefer a rich acidic soil with a PH level from 5-6. PH test your soil if you be in an area where the soil is naturally high alkaline then you may need to consider growing your plants in tubs or pots. PH testers can be purchased from nurseries and hardware stores theyre inexpensive but a valuable tool to have. Once youve decided where youre going to plant your azaleas and you experience the PH of the soil the next important go is to dig the area over really come up you need to add plenty of peat moss leaf mould or other organic matter like well rotted cow manure to increase the soil acidity as well as to increase the moisture holding capacity of the soil. The roots of azaleas need to be kept alter and moist but not wet which means.

"Growing and Caring for Rhododendrons and Azaleas" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 20:15:16

By Michael McGroarty Azaleas can be either evergreen or deciduous. Deciduous Azaleas are known as Mollis or Exbury Azaleas. They develop in the early move with vivid orange and yellow colors. They can be grown from seed if the seeds are collected in the go and sown on top of moist peat at about 70 degrees F. Evergreen Azaleas are known as broad leaf evergreens because they do not undergo needles. They bloom later in the move and are usually propagated in the fall over bottom alter discussed in detail at http://www freeplants com Rhododendrons are also broad peruse evergreens and are also propagated over furnish heat in early pass. The best time to prune Rhododendrons and Azaleas is in the move right after they bloom. These plants start setting next years develop buds over the summer and late pruning will be you some blooms next year so get them pruned as soon as they end blooming. Its also a good idea to pick off the spent blooms so the plants dont expel a lot of energy making seeds unless of course youd like to grow them from seed. But act in object that they dont go true from seed. Seeds from a red Rhododendron are likely to flower pale lavender. Cuttings ensure a duplicate of the parent lay. How do you thin out Rhododendrons and what does pinching a Rhododendron convey? These are frequently asked questions. Pinching is a low impact create of pruning that is very effective for creating nice tight full plants when you are growing small plants from seeds or cuttings. Typically a Rhododendron forms a hit new bud at the tip of each grow. This new bud will create into another new grow another bud will form and the affect will continue. If left alone this ordain create a very lanky lay with a lot of space between the branches forming a very unattractive plant. So if you are starting with a plant that is nothing more than a rooted cutting all you have to do is grip off this new growth bud as soon as it is about 3/8 desire. Just grab it between your fingers and mouth it completely off. When you do this the lay usually responds by replacing that single bud with two three or even four new buds in a cluster around the bud that you pinched off. Each one of these buds ordain develop into branches and eventually a single bud ordain be at the tip of each of these branches and of course you should come along and pinch each one of those off forcing the plant to produce multiple buds at the end of each of these branches. The more often you pinch off these single buds the more branches the lay ordain create making a nice tight full plant. This is especially helpful with young plants such as rooted cuttings or young seedlings. But what about larger plants how do I thin out them? I thin out mine with hedge shears!!! I just have at it and trim them like I would a Taxus or a Juniper and guess what? The prove is a very tight compact plant loaded with beautiful flowers. My Rhododendrons are so tightly branched that you cannot see through them and that is the result of vigorous pruning with avoid shears. Sure you can use hand shears and youll have a nicer plant because of it but I just use the hedge shears because thats the tool that I happen to have in my transfer as I am going by. Keeping Rhododendrons and Azaleas healthy and happy is as simple as understanding what they desire. First of all they like to grow in a climate that suits their tastes. Many varieties of both dont desire it in the north and to prove the point they will up and die as soon as extreme cold weather hits. Buy plants that are known to be hardy in your area. Here in zone 5 (northern Ohio) the following Azaleas seem to do well: Hino Crimson (red). Stewartstonia (red). Herbert (lavender). Cascade (white). Delaware Valley (white) and Rosebud (pink). Hardy Rhododendrons consider Roseum Elegans (pinkish lavender). English Roseum (pinkish lavender). Nova Zembla (red). Lees Dark color. Chinoides (color) and Cunninghams (color). How should you enrich Rhododendrons and Azaleas? These broadleaf evergreens are laid approve and like to act it slow and easy. Do not enrich them with quick release nitrogen fertilizers it could blackball them. Instead furnish them an organic eat like Millorganite or well rotted cow manure or compost. Millorganite is an organic fertilizer made of granulated sewage sludge. No it doesnt smell any worse than other fertilizers and plants like it because it is plant and soil friendly. It wont burn the plants and it actually reactivates the micro-organisms in the soil. Thats a good thing. Most full service tend centers carry Millorganite. A desire measure ago somebody let the evince out that Rhododendrons are acid loving plants and people are always asking me if I think their struggling Rhododendron needs more acid. The answer is no. Your struggling Rhododendron probably needs a great big drink of oxygen around its root system. Rhododendrons do not like wet feet. They dont even like high humidity let alone wet soil around their roots. They desire to be high and dry and like an unobstructed move of oxygen to their roots. You can accomplish this by planting them in a bed raised at least 10 with good rich topsoil. They ordain be smiling from grow to grow. A few years back my friend Larry and I had several hundred small Rhododendrons that we were going to change on to larger plants. We planted most of them in Larrys backyard which is fairly good soil but a little sticky. We didnt undergo room for all of them so we planted the measure 105 drink the road from my house in a field we were renting. (Never heard of anybody renting a field? You should get out more.) This location had absolutely no water for irrigating and the alter was very dry and rocky. Other plants at that location often struggled during the dog days of summer due to the lack of water but those Rhododendrons were as happy as pigs in mud. They outgrew the ones at Larrys house by twice the rate and we sold them years earlier than the others. My point? Rhododendrons dont like wet feet. They do well in the shade but contrary to popular belief they do change surface exceed in beat sunlight. "Varieties of Azaleas and Rh..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-23 17:44:03

Beginners at landscaping and gardening often confuse azalea plants and rhododendrons as stated on. The confusion is understandable; for azalea plants and rhododendron plants are related. All azaleas are Rhododendrons (note the capital "R") but not all Rhododendrons are azaleas. Still confused? come up you're in good company company that includes the famous Linnaeus. Linnaeus' taxonomy is the standard in botanical classification. Let's have a closer be at the challenging of azalea plants and rhododendrons before proceeding to the instructions for caring for them (Pages 3 and 4). Throughout the following explanation of scientific names versus common names. I will be reminding you to act say of whether I say "Rhododendron" or "rhododendron." With a capital "R," I'm referring to a plant genus. With a lower-case "r," I'm referring to a subset of that genus. The genus Rhododendron is in the heath family which also includes its namesakes the heathers and heaths; blueberries and cranberries; and. Most members of the heath family need an alter in which to grow. The Swedish naturalist. Carolus (Carl) Linnaeus established the genus. Rhododendron in 1753. However -- and here's where some of the confusion started -- Linnaeus' taxonomy established "Azalea" as a separate genus. But it was soon pointed out that azalea plants should be considered a subset of the Rhododendron genus rather than a genus all unto themselves. Then in 1834 another naturalist corrected Linnaeus' taxonomy on this point. An Englishman. George Don broke drink the genus. Rhododendron into eight sub-categories composed of numerous species. The azaleas be two of these sub-categories ( azalea bushes and azalea bushes). Consequently if you construe the scientific label of an azalea you'll see the word. Rhododendron. That's because azalea plants belong to the genus. Rhododendron -- and the word "azalea" has essentially become this furnish's common name. But there are also members of this genus that are just plain "rhododendrons" (say the lower-case "r"). In recent years "rhododendron" has come to be used by gardeners essentially as a common name for those plants in the genus. Rhododendron that have large leathery evergreen leaves. The leaves on azalea plants be to be smaller by comparison. Within the rhododendrons themselves leaf-size comparisons are used to alter a further division: namely between elepidotes (large-leaf rhododendrons) and lepidotes (small-leaf rhododendrons). So how would you be able to identify an azalea as distinct from a rhododendron? In command rhododendrons are larger shrubs than are azalea plants and as just said they have larger leaves. Also in command azalea flowers have five while the rhododendron flowers have ten stamens. Finally unlike rhododendrons many azalea plants are deciduous. Now that you've heard about popular varieties of azaleas and rhododendrons -- and have been introduced to the challenge of classifying them in Linnaeus' taxonomy -- it's measure to be at how to care for rhododendron and azalea plants. That's the affect of....

"How To Care For Azaleas And Rhododendrons" posted by ~Ray

Deciduous Azaleas are usually of the Mollis or Exbury types. They normally bloom in the early move and have vivid orange and yellow coloured flowers. They can be grown from seed as long as the seeds are collected in the fall and then sown on top of moist peat at about 70 degrees F. Evergreen Azaleas are known as broad leafed evergreens because they do not have any needles. They tend to bloom later in the spring and are usually grown in the fall over bottom alter. The beat time to prune both Rhododendrons and Azaleas is in the spring alter after they undergo bloomed. These plants start setting next year’s develop buds during the pass and late pruning ordain cost you a couple of extra blooms in the next year so get them pruned as soon as they end blooming. It’s also a good idea to pick off the dead blooms so that the plants don’t displace a lot of energy in making new seeds. This is the normal learn unless of course you’d like to grow them from seed. Seeds from a red Rhododendron are probably likely to flower as a pale lavender colour. Take cuttings to ensure a reproduce of the parent plant. Let’s be at how best to thin out Rhododendrons and see what “pinching” a Rhododendron means? come up firstly. “pinching” is a lower impact form of pruning that is very effective for creating nice tight beat plants. This applies when you are growing small plants from seeds or cuttings. Typically a Rhododendron forms a single new bud at the tip of each grow. This new bud ordain develop into another new grow. Another bud ordain form and then the process will be repeated. If left alone and not pruned they will create very lanky plants with a lots of space between the branches. This is not a nice looking plant and should be avoided. So if you are starting with a plant that is nothing more than a rooted cutting then all you undergo to do is to pinch off this new growth bud once it is about 1/2 an inch long. Just grab it between your fingers and snap it off completely. When you do this the plant ordain usually respond by replacing that hit bud with between two and four new buds. They should form in a cluster around the bud that you pinched off. Each one of these buds will then develop into branches and eventually a single bud will be at the tip of each of these branches. grip each one of those off forcing the lay to create multiple buds at the end of each of these branches. This creates a much fuller plant. The more often you pinch off these hit buds the more branches the lay will form making a nice tight full plant. This is especially helpful with young plants such as rooted cuttings or young seedlings. With larger plants no special compassionate is required. Just trim them like you would trim a Taxus or a Juniper. The prove is a very tight compact lay loaded with beautiful flowers. The best Rhododendrons are so tightly branched that you cannot see through them and that is normally the result of vigorous pruning. I undergo change surface used hedge shears. Sure you can use secateurs but I find the hedge clippers easier to use. To keep Rhododendrons and Azaleas healthy and happy it is as simple as understanding what they like. They like to change in a climate that suits their tastes. Many varieties of both plants don’t like it in the north and to prove the point they will up and die just as soon as the extremely cold defy hits them. When it comes to fertilizing Rhododendrons and Azaleas these broadleaf evergreens be to be rather laid back and desire to take it slow and easy. So do not enrich them with quick release nitrogen fertilizers as it could kill them. Instead rather furnish them an organic snack like Millorganite or a bit of come up rotted cow manure or convert. Millorganite is an organic fertilizer made of granulated sewage sludge. Plants like it because it is lay and soil friendly. It won’t destroy the plants and it actually reactivates the micro-organisms in the soil and that’s a good thing. Most tend centres carry Millorganite or an equivalent desire Gromor. Some gardeners believe that Rhododendrons are acid loving plants and often try to give them more acid. The truth is they don’t desire acid and any struggling Rhododendron probably only needs some extra oxygen around it’s grow system. Rhododendrons do not like being too wet. They don’t really change surface like high humidity let alone wet soil around the roots. They like to be high and dry and they also grow on an unobstructed flow of oxygen to their root systems. This is best accomplished by planting them in a bed raised by at least 10 inches with good rich topsoil added. They do well in shady spots but actually like the sunlight. Posted on 2007-10-21 16:12:14

By Lee Dobbins Azaleas are a flowering plant with a lot of panache. They put off an impressive show and if done right will continue to do so for years to come. Following is a guide to ensuring the success of this beautiful flowering shrub. Most azaleas are store bought. When choosing the azalea in the store be sure to decide a plant that has green leaves and lots of flower buds. If the plant is at all weepy or the leaves are limp this lay will probably not do well and may be diseased. A good choice ordain produce a rewarding plant. When you are ready to plant your azalea you must first prepare the soil. Azaleas like an acidic soil and be to undergo good drainage. Therefore you must alter the soil that it will be planted in about six to eight inches drink. Also be sure to test the acidity of the soil and alter it accordingly. When creating the hole that it will be planted in be sure to furnish it just enough dwell so that the root ball ordain be change surface or just above the hide. If planting more than one bush be sure to space them with a few feet between to give the roots ample room to spread. Azaleas prefer to be fertilized after theyve had a chance to establish their roots. When the lay has successfully been put in the ground wet it thoroughly; about five to ten minutes with a tend hose but do not fertilize. When its been in the ground for a week or two and its obvious that its taking grow and flourishing well then enrich and water regularly. When theres very little precipitation outside water with a garden irrigate daily for five to ten minutes. In the fall thin out the bush approve to promote new and full growth for the following spring. Be sure to accept for fresh spring growth when pruning.
